Earlier this year, burglars used a backhoe to smash into Landings Restaurant in Portugal Cove–St. Philip's and swipe its ATM. That already marked the fifth time so far this year that heavy equipment has been used in thefts in the area. Another person has been arrested for stealing an S160 Bobcat brand skid steer loader in Moniteau County. In July, a Coleman Township man was charged with stealing a skid steer from a Firstbrook Line Road address in Temiskaming Shores. These are only a few among the many cases of construction equipment theft this year.

"They always think it will be somebody else's machine so they don't go to that second step in trying to prevent their machine from being stolen," he said. "They'll walk out of the door with a $100,000 piece of equipment with no anti-theft [immobilization] system in that machine at all."
As a conclusion of the Annual Theft Report, NER suggests that equipment owners and insurers take proactive efforts to heighten both equipment and work-site security since there is no centralized organization that focuses on the issue.
